Kansas wins girls hoops title

Kansas beat Texas, 28-22, in double overtime on March 8 to win the Amherst Youth Basketball fifth-sixth-grade title. After three hard-fought and close playoffs games, Kansas beat Texas, 28-22, in double overtime on March 8 to win the Amherst Youth Basketball fifth-sixth-grade title.

The score was tied up at 22-22 at the end of regulation with scoring by Kansas' Jennifer Schwab (12), Alexa Slisz (eight) and Jordan Weinstein (two) and Texas' Valerie McNamara (12), Morgan Maley (six), Evelyn Mangold (two) and Emily Palmer (two).

Both teams were blanked in the first overtime with great rebounding and defense by Kansas' Morgan Kennedy and Arriana Scamurra.

Kansas pulled away in the second overtime with excellent offensive play by Jenna Stogsdill (four) and Slisz's (two) and Schwab's fantastic rebounding.

Their second victory was even tougher, squeaking out a 21-20 victory in the last seconds of the game over Baylor on March 6.

Schwab (10), Slisz, Stogsdill, Tori Sims and Jordan Weinstein (two points each) contributed offensively for Kansas, while Colleen Doyle (11), Caroline Renaldo (seven) and Grace Florian (two) scored buckets for Baylor.

Kansas opened tournament play with a 21-17 victory over Oklahoma on Feb. 28 with great offensive play by Slisz, Schwab and Stogsdill and strong defense by Sims, Sam Stanford and Jules Castronova.

Kansas is coached by Laurie Kennedy.
