Sports briefs Amherst Central graduates and Amherst residents Lindsay Bronnenkant and Sara Heidinger, of the University of Rochester field hockey team, were named as National Field Hockey Coaches Association scholar- athletes. Amherst Central's Stephen Arlington, Sam Huoh, Elana Korn, Casey Martin, Amy Simon and David Szymkowiak; Sweet Home's Brian Barnas, Andrew Hopkins, Aaron Klein and Jill Nasisi; Williamsville East's Matt Bradley, Kane Hsieh, Matt Pawlicki and Brian Wallden; and Williamsville North's Matt Aloisio, Matt Helm and Sarah Mikulski were named All-WNY scholar-athletes for the winter season. Szymkowiak, Hopkins and Pawlicki were repeat winners. Amherst Skating Club's Avery Steadman took home the gold medal in the Intermediate Ladies Test Track and bronze in Intermediate Spins at the sixth annual Skate Challenge held March 1-2 in Cicero, N.Y. presented by the Skating Club of Central New York. The competition featured beginner through masters level figure skating. Amherst resident Robert McDonald made 15 saves in net as the State University of New York at Cobleskill men's lacrosse team beat Delaware Technical and Community College-Terry, 10-8, on March 14. Williamsville East posted the eighth-best grade point average for high school hockey teams in New York State for the 2007-08 winter season with a 94.155. The Erie Community College men's basketball team finished eighth at the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament in Danville, Ill. ECC lost in the consolation championship game to South Mountain (Arizona) Community College, 86-73. Amherst resident and Sweet Home graduate Steven Roberts was a member of the team. The Audubon's men's club is looking for new members. Joining the club enables a golfer to compete in weekly tournaments with four major weekend events (family picnics and stags). There are script/money payoffs for every weekend tournament. A computer will keep record of scores with ones handicap for Audubon and away courses. Trophies will be awarded to winning golfers. The Hilbert College athletic department recently announced the dates for its 2008 boys' and girls' summer basketball camps. All sessions will run Sunday through Thursday and campers will have the option of staying overnight (resident camper) or commuting (day camper). The girls' camps will be held from June 29-July 3 and from July 13-17, while the boys camps run from July 6-10 and July 20-24.
