All-Bee Team named; process explained

Being selected for the All-Bee Basketball Team is an honor that the recipients are proud to receive, not just because it looks good, but also because opposing coaches see how valuable a player each recipient is to his or her team.

The voting process for the All-Bee Team is completely in the hands of the coaches of teams in the Bee's coverage area. At the end of the season, each coach was mailed a ballot and a list of nominated players from which to choose. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.

Each coach was asked to vote for an overall MVP, which is worth 15 points, a first team and a second team. Coaches then placed their first, second, third, etc., choices for the first team in descending order of importance, starting at the top, and then did the same for the second team.

With the top first-team pick, a player earns 10 points, down through one point for the last second team pick. The total points were compiled, which determined the order of the All-Bee Teams. The player with the most points was named the MVP, and so on in descending order.

This year's boys MVP, Depew's Greg Osika, edged out St. Joe's Phil Scaffidi in a tiebreaker to determine his MVP status. Osika received seven MVP votes, one more than Scaffidi, to break the stalemate created when they both got the same total number of points.

Nearly every coach responded this year, with only the Iroquois boys and Mount St. Mary girls coaches failing to return a ballot.
