St. Greg's 'scientists' win district competition

St. Gregory the Great had 18 seventh- and eighth-graders compete in the Science Olympiad district competition held recently.

For the second consecutive year, the team placed first overall, competing in more than 20 different science-based events that included both building and cerebral contests. The Cougars qualified to attend the statewide competition that will take place April 12 in New Paltz.

Team members, from both Amherst and Clarence, include Alyssa Aldridge, Ryan Bartels, Tim Balkin, Matthew Battaglia, Calvin Butler, Michael Cobler, Danielle Gaulin, Julietta Gervase, Michael Hillery, Caillin Keefe, Emily Ludwig, Corey Maher, Jimmy Spellman, Kenny Strom, Catherine Suchan, Patrick Waldron, Tom Warner and Andrew Zgoda.

The St. Gregory team was the only Catholic school to participate in the district contest.
