Amherst Alumni Foundation plans fundraiser to support schools

When the school budget comes up a bit short for project funding, Amherst Central Alumni Foundation Inc. tries to accommodate teachers and students as best possible.

In the past four years, the foundation has awarded several grants, averaging $5,000 annually, said Ellen Marshall, vice president of the foundation.

"We try to fund areas that aren't covered in the budget," she said. "Teachers can apply for grants for special programs. Students, chosen for seminars, have also applied."

She said the most recent requests have been for technology programs, which are increasing each year.

With a high demand for materials, the ACAF Inc. is trying its best to help everyone in need.

The foundation has planned its annual Springfest Fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, March 28 at Sonoma Grille, 5010 Main St., near Interstate 290, Snyder.

Admission is $10 and includes a drink ticket and snacks.

The band, Fools Like Us, will perform. Bill Blanford, president of the Amherst Board of Education, is a member of the band.

He said employees from the school had come to watch him and his band play around town and suggested they perform for the fundraiser.

"The foundation does good work for the school," he said, adding that it's a good partnership between the district and the ACAF Inc.

Marshall said all members of the community are welcome to attend.
