Arizona edges California, wins sixth-grade boys 'B'

Arizona prevailed over California, 28-25, to win the Amherst Youth Basketball sixth-grade boys grade "B" division championship.

California's Michael Keenehan (17 points) tied it with 14.2 seconds remaining.

Arizona's Colin Greenway (seven points) drained one of two free throws, later stole an inbounds pass, was fouled and made two more foul shots.

Arizona's Patrick Hartigan (six), Quinn Keenan (five), David Maher (four), Patrick Kelly, Nick Aja and Nick Castalone (two points each) tallied. Matt Rosen led a late defensive charge.

Ryan Mitchell's six points, Vic Saini's crucial bucket, and defense from Matt Soos, Tyler Mulone, and Michael Salmon contributed for California.

Sixth-grade boys - semifinals

Oregon State 39, Oregon 25

Oregon State held onto a five-point lead at halftime.

Oregon fell behind in the third quarter and couldn't close the gap.

Joe Brady (19), Ben Clement (eight), Ryan Czerwinski, Matt Macomber and Eric Benshadle (four each) scored for Oregon State with many of the above baskets set up with assists from Jon Hall and screens by Joe Unanov.

Mitch Fors (eight), Casey Davis (seven), Steve Zaprowski (four), Ryan Woods, Ben Sharf and Dan Mayers (two each) tallied for Oregon. Brandon Hill and Fred Clabo also played well for the Ducks.

Fifth-grade boys

Michigan 36, Illinois 32

Jared Kish, Mike Panzarella and A.J. DiChristina had their best rebounding games of the year.

Eric Duran played his usual tenacious defense, along with Kevin Abel and Braeden Gillman.

A second-half offensive explosion was led by the outside shooting of Jeff Calderon and the inside-outside play of Jaelin Marong. Alex Smith also contributed to the scoring effort. Smith and Panzarella also contributed by setting effective screens for Calderon and Marong.

Illinois played hard and was led by Greg Cook, Jacob Schoellkopf, Conner Cooley and Justin Collins.

Illinois received their third-place awards at the end of the game.

Third-fourth-grade boys

St. John's 26, Providence 16

St. John's held off a late comeback by Rutgers for a 26-16 win.

Greg Dolan led St. John's with 12 points.

Graham Dolan scored seven, Mike Poturalski chipped in four, Andrew Vincent added two and Sahil Chaudhuri tacked on a point to round out the scoring for St. John's.

Frank DiNoto had several key rebounds.

Eric Clarkson led Rutgers with seven points. Andrew Looney added four, Tyler Eldridge tossed in three, and Connor Kelly and Justin Finberg scored a point apiece. Matt Terrance, Joe Oliver and Don Leitten played tough defense for Rutgers.
