Out of the Past 125 Years Ago March 15, 1883 On the morning of the 8th, at the residence of the bride's parents in Amherst, Miss Carrie Le Clear Young and Mr. Charles W. Hamlin of Buffalo were united in marriage by the Rev. H.C. Milliman of Williamsville. They enter upon the voyage of life with the brightest prospects and with the heartfelt congratulations of their many friends. Last week the Dodge Roller Mill again started running full blast after a shutdown for improvements. Mr. W.G. Lee was paid $3.00 by the village board for services as a fire warden for one year. Farmers who wish first-class and reliable clover and timothy seed can find just such articles at George Cox's seed store. A gloom has been spread over our entire community by the death of Mr. William Burt after one week of suffering. The fatal disease was pneumonia. "The proper way to warm the house is to keep the cellar coaled." 100 Years Ago March 12, 1908 Charles Engel takes possession of the Amherst Center House on March 14, having purchased it from Leonard Mislin. Mr. and Mrs. Mislin will move onto the farm now occupied by Mr. V. Roy Pratt. A.H. Downey has been asked to continue as principal of the Williamsville High School, with the Board of Education offering him a salary increase of $100, which would make his salary $1,100 per year. Peter Lorentzen of Lancaster has opened a tailor shop in the Hoffman Building in Williamsville. 75 Years Ago March 16, 1933 Our banks are open for business. Let's meet this turning tide with new vigor and go ahead and work for our town and support its institutions. Wehrle & Beach Inc., well known firm of Williamsville which has functioned over a long period of years in undertaking and the furniture business, has decided to discontinue the furniture line and concentrate all efforts in the mortician department of the business. Jack Gillis' birthday will be celebrated Friday, March 17 at the All-Ways Inn. Special blue pike dinner served from 6 until closing. 50 Years Ago March 13, 1958 Councilman Edgar J. Barth was sworn in as deputy supervisor of the Town of Amherst on Wednesday afternoon; he will serve in that capacity until Supervisor Eduard F. Metz recovers from his heart attack and is able to resume his duties. The supervisor's physician, Dr. David K. Miller, said the supervisor is exhausted. His recent three-week vacation in Florida was not long enough to benefit him. Supervisor Metz has not felt well for some time and associates said he complained after walking up the steep stairs to the second floor assembly hall in the municipal building. The town has grown so large that the volume of work he must handle is staggering. There is probably no man on the Niagara Frontier who has contributed more to the youth of the area than Williamsville's Hube Coyer. This June, he will retire as associate professor and health and education from the State University College at Buffalo, where he has been director of athletics for 27 years. Franchises are now available in the Clarence-Amherst Softball League for the coming season. Any teams interested in signing up are asked to contact Bob Seibel, secretary, at PL. 2340 of be on-hand for the league meeting on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. at Smith's Tavern. 25 Years Ago March 9, 1983 Petitions for the Williamsville school board must be submitted by April 15. The terms of four board members expire this year: Judith Katz, Virginia Biggie, Frederick Huber and Michael Kibby. Sweet Home recorded a dramatic 74-70 double overtime win over Kenmore West Saturday to win the Section VI Class A-1 basketball title. |
