Kindergarten, pre-K registration under way for 2008-09 school year The Amherst School District is holding registration for next year's kindergarten class. Letters will be sent home to families with older children registered in the district and to families who have already contacted the schools for information on the kindergarten program. Residents who do not have children enrolled in school and have a child who will be 5 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2008, should contact either Smallwood Drive Elementary at 362-2100 or Windermere Boulevard Elementary at 362-4100 for information on the kindergarten orientation in April and kindergarten screening in May. The district also has prekindergarten registration available. The program is open to any 4-year-old who resides in the district. The half-day prekindergarten program operates out of two sites, Windermere Boulevard Elementary School and Amherst Community Church Child Care Center on Washington Highway. Transportation is provided to and from the Windermere site; parents are responsible for transportation at the Amherst Community Church site. Pre-K registration for the upcoming school year has started. Those families who have already contacted the district have been mailed the pre-K registration form. The forms are available through the Early Childhood Education office at Windermere Elementary School. For information call 362-4100. There are a limited number of spaces in the program, and placement is not guaranteed. Tentative placement letters will be sent out to families by the end of March. Since the program is grant-funded, definitive confirmation will occur only after the state budget is passed and Universal Pre-K funding is guaranteed. |
