Sports briefs Amherst Central junior Abbie Gowen broke two New York State Girls Lacrosse records last season as a sophomore on the girls varsity lacrosse team. Gowen has the record for most assists in a season (99) and in a game (10). Double T Archery Club will hold the fourth annual traditional Archery Cabin Fever Shoot starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 1 and/or Sunday, March 2 at 1110 North French Rd. Amherst. The trophy shoot-off will be at 4 p.m. The cost is $8 per day. The event is for recurves and long bow only. Recurve bows will be available from the youth archery program for those who would like to participate but don't have a recurve bow. For more information, call Mark at 693-0331. The Amherst Soccer Association is looking for up to six girls to play travel soccer on a U-13 girls travel team. You must have a birth date between Aug. 1, 1994 and July 31, 1995. Games start in May. Erin Schafer, 11, of Amherst and a member of the Holiday Valley Ski Race Team, placed 10th in the JIV division of the United States Ski Association sanctioned slalom ski race held at Kissing Bridge Ski Area on Feb. 10. Tommy Shantler, 8, of Williamsville, and a member of the Holiday Valley Ski Race Team, placed first in the JVI division of the United States Ski Association sanctioned slalom ski race held at Kissing Bridge Ski Area on Feb. 10. Shantler has four first place finishes in as many starts in the Niagara Frontier Ski Council ski race series. Sweet Home graduate Steven Roberts is second in assists on the Erie Community College's men's basketball team. The Amherst native has 101 assists. ECC finished the regular season 24-5 overall and 13-1 in the Western New York Conference. ECC is ranked sixth in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association Division II poll. The Kats will be the top seed in this weekend's Region III tournament, hosted by Jamestown Community College. |
