Fluent in Ukrainian, doctor bridges communication gap

Fidelis Care has added Dr. Bohdan Dejneka of Snyder to its provider network in Erie County.

Known as "Dr. Bo," the Amherst pediatrician brings a celebratory spirit to his practice, Holiday Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Festive seasonal decorations adorn the converted residential home, located at 4201 Main St., to keep the mood light and his patients' worries to a minimum.

Dejneka is fluent in Ukrainian and able to understand Russian and Polish, which he considers a plus when serving Fidelis Care members in the local Ukrainian community.

Growing up in suburban Rochester, Dejneka recalled translating for his grandmother, a native of Ukraine, from as early as age 3. He said cutting through the language barrier is reassuring for his patients.

"You're able to find out what the problem is," said Dejneka, who wants his patients and parents to make the most of their appointments.

He opened his practice in fall 2006.
