South loses playoff thriller
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Williamsville South's Trevor Clark (12) and Kenmore East's Ryan Patterson (11) skate to the puck in the teams' Section VI Western New York Varsity Hockey Federation small school quarterfinal game last Sunday at Buffalo State Sports Arena. South lost 2-1.
Seventh-seeded Williamsville South gave second-seed Kenmore East everything they could handle in the Section VI Western New York Varsity Hockey small school quarterfinals but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs prevailed, 2-1, on Sunday at Buffalo State Sports Arena.

"After the game, myself and (associate coach) Kevin Deakin told the team we have never been more proud of them," said South coach Sean Green. "We only finished with two wins but we were in every game and seemed to get stronger as the season went on."

South played Kenmore East tough, scoring first with 4:33 left in the second period on the power play. Daren Powers tipped in a shot from the point from Shawn Jordan. Mike Mangone also assisted.

Kenmore East's Alex Silvia (Frank Briandi, Shawn Ferger) tied the game with 37 seconds left in the second on the power play.

Kenmore East's Mark Arnone (Silvia) scored the game-winning goal with 3:35 remaining in the third.

Kenmore East outshot South, 25-20. Green said goalie Brian D'Angelo was South's best player on the ice. South's other goalie, Matt Green, played forward because several forwards were out of the lineup.

"That is another example of what type of team this is," said coach Green.

With only four seniors graduating, D'Angelo, Dustin Ditallio, Adam Baker and Brett Zdrojewski, the team returns the majority of the team for next season.

"I think this team deserved better for all of their hard work," said coach Green. "The younger kids learned how to compete at the Federation level."
