Amherst wins on senior night The Amherst Central varsity girls basketball team sent off its seniors with a victory. The Lady Tigers (12-8, 7-7) beat Tonawanda, 66-30, on senior night last Wednesday at Amherst. Seniors Jenny Newhouse and Amy Simon scored 23 and 11 points, respectively. Seniors Casey Martin, Elana Korn and Daisy Timlin were also honored. Amherst led, 36-16, at halftime. "This game was a well-rounded performance by everyone," said Amherst coach JoAnna Fildes. "This is the first game of the season that everyone scored points and led us to our second highest total points for the season." Newhouse also blocked five shots and grabbed 12 rebounds. "We have been successful lately with pushing the ball inside to Newhouse," said Fildes. "She has really stepped her game up on both sides of the floor." Eva Lankes added 12 points. Prior to the Tonawanda game, Amherst lost to Pioneer, 69-40, and Depew, 44-39. Pioneer, the No. 1 team in Class A in New York State, took a 34-17 lead into halftime. Joelle Connelly led Pioneer (15-0) with 27 points. "Overall we played a good game," said Fildes. "Pioneer comes at you from all angles. They are a very good team." Simon scored 13 for Amherst. Teammate Jequana Roberts scored 10. Depew took a 21-15 advantage into halftime. "We continued to turn the ball over and had a poor shooting percentage on the night," said Fildes. Newhouse scored 19 points. "We continued to work the ball inside to Newhouse to allow for our success," said Fildes. Fildes said her team got within three points with under two minutes remaining but could not get the open shots to fall. "Depew's guards had a great night shooting and played well on the defensive end," she added. Lankes tacked on eight points. |
