Sports brief The Hilbert College athletic department recently announced the dates for its 2008 boys' and girls' summer basketball camps. All sessions will run Sunday through Thursday and campers will have the option of staying overnight (resident camper) or commuting (day camper). The girls' camps will be held from June 29-July 3 and from July 13-17, while the boys camps run from July 6-10 and July 20-24. Double T Archery Club will hold the fourth annual traditional Archery Cabin Fever Shoot starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 1 and/or Sunday, March 2 at 1110 North French Rd. Amherst. The trophy shoot-off will be at 4 p.m. The cost is $8 per day. The event is for recurves and long bow only. Recurve bows will be available from the youth archery program for those who would like to participate but don't have a recurve bow. For more information, call Mark at 693-0331. The Buffalo Defenders AAU girls basketball organization will be holding open tryouts for the 16U basketball team from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 at St. Mary's School of the Deaf, 2253 Main St., Buffalo. Team New Era Baseball will hold tryouts for boys ages 10-18 for its fall travel elite teams and for boys ages 10-11 to be part of the Disney Experience team to travel to Walt Disney World in 2009. These teams will be region-wide teams, encompassing qualified players from Western and Central New York and Southern Ontario. Tryouts will be held during February and March. Former Miller Tennis Center instructor Gina Sabatose helped the USA junior and youth tennis team win seven golds, six silvers and 19 bronzes in singles and doubles competition at the Pan American Maccabi Games held in January in Buenos Aires. Sabatose is Clarion University's women's tennis coach and professional tennis registry teaching professional. John Bauman, a Williamsville North graduate and Williamsville resident, helped the University at Buffalo's men's 4x400-meter relay win the New York State Championships at the New Balance Collegiate meet on Feb. 8-9. The team finished in 3:19.35, edging out State University of New York at Binghamton. Steve Berus, a Williamsville North graduate and East Amherst resident, won the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.48) and 200 breaststroke (2:17.85) in the Rochester Institute of Technology swimming and diving team's 190-79 victory over Nazareth College on Feb. 9. Celia Alterio, an Amherst Central graduate and Amherst resident, ran a personal best time of 5:17.80 in the 1-mile for the Oneonta State College's women's indoor track team at the Boston University Valentine Invitational last weekend. Alterio's time qualified her for the State University of New York Athletic Conference on Feb. 23 at Hobart/William Smith. |
