Raoul Hailpern, professor, editorial director

Raoul Hailpern, 91, of Amherst, died on Feb. 9, 2008.

Mr. Hailpern received a bachelor's degree in math from the University of London and a doctoral degree from the University at Buffalo.

He taught math at the University at Buffalo and was a teacher at The Park School from 1958 until 2003, retiring at the age of 86.

In January 2000, he was featured in the Someone You Should Know section of The Amherst Bee. He told the Bee, "I love teaching and plan to keep doing so as long as I'm still capable."

He also taught at Millard Fillmore College and was once voted the favorite professor by students. Mr. Hailpern was the editorial director for the Mathematical Association of America.

His passion was teaching, and he enjoyed reading, solving math puzzles and being with his grandchildren.

Mr. Hailpern was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Fanny. He is survived by two daughters, Jocelyn Jackman and Doris McKay; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements were made by Dietrich Funeral Home.
