The international percussion sensation STOMP will bring its infectious rhythms to Shea's Performing Arts Center from Friday, Feb. 15 to Sunday, Feb. 17.
The young performers make rhythm out of anything they can get their hands on that makes a sound. Stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping orchestra; Zippo lighters flip open and closed to create a fiery fugue; wooden poles thump and clack in a rhythmic explosion. STOMP uses everything but conventional percussion instruments, including trashcans, tea chests, plastic bags, plungers, boots and hubcaps - to fill the stage with compelling and infectious rhythms.
From its beginnings as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international phenomenon, having performed in more than 350 cities in 36 countries worldwide.
After playing to sellout crowds for more than 12 seasons, STOMP continues its phenomenal run with one North American touring company, two productions overseas, a permanent London company and a European tour, and the New York company's continuos sellout run at The Orpheum Theatre, which celebrates its 14th anniversary this month.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 5 and 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, and 2 and 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17 at Shea's Performing Arts Center, 646 Main St., Buffalo. Tickets are $27.50-$47.50 and are available at the Shea's ticket office, 650 Main St., or through Ticketmaster at 852-5000 or www.ticketmaster.com. For groups, call 829-1154.
