North, South set personal best times at RIT

Personal best times fell for many athletes on the Williamsville North and Williamsville South indoor track teams at last Saturday's fourth annual RIT Tiger High School Invitational. The event was held at the Gordon Fieldhouse on the campus of Rochester Institute of Technology.

North coach Julian Blake and South coach Sam Hasan each said it was the best their athletes had ever finished at the event.

North girls

Sarah Mikulski set a personal best and meet record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.82. The old record was 8.87 set in 2006 by Neshay Maxwell.

Teammate Dawn Hu broke a North school record in the 1500 racewalk with a personal best time of 8:37.25 to take 10th. The old school record was 9:19.4 set by Wendy Myers in the 2002-03 season.

North's 4x800 relay of Rachel Dorogi, Caitlin Triantafillou, Caitlin Curry and Kim Berus broke the school record with a fourth place time of 10:25.88. The old school record was 10:41.14 set in 2006-07 by Ashley Filmore, Molly Mitchell, Berus and Kim Schueler.

Other personal best times by North girls were set by Amy Loud (55 hurdles, 9:18, fourth; and 300, 43.88, second); Dorogi (3000, 11:33.59, fourth); Raven Baxter (55 dash, 7.93, 14th); Curry (1000, 3:29.77, 21st); Michele Bauman (1000, 3:39.54, 35th) and Rebecca Pittman (1500 racewalk, 9:18.48, 21st).

Meredith Kirby took fourth in the 300 in 44.32. In the 600, Schueler placed ninth in 1:45.74 and Triantafillou came in 17th in 1:50.04. Berus took 10th in the 1-mile in 5:54.71. Dorogi went 5:30.71 in the 1500 to place 14th.

Natalie Worley went 13:25.92 in the 3000 for 26th. Megan Winkle long jumped 14-3.5 to place 21st; Baxter long jumped 13-7 for 29th. Kirby tripled jumped 31-11 for 15th.

North's 4x400 relay of Schueler, Jessica Little, Mikulski and Loud came in seventh in 4:20.03.

"I thought our girls performed superb," said Blake. "It was nice to see Sarah set a meet record and to have a lot of girls finish in the top five."

North boys

Sean Felton led the North boys with a fifth place in the triple jump. He leapt 42-0.5.

Mike Thielman came in sixth in the 3200 in a personal best time of 10:19.03. Thielman also placed 21st in the 1600 in 4:55.06.

Other personal best times were recorded by Collin Preston (55 dash, 7.01, 15th); Sinclair Johnson (300, 38.75, 12th); Steve Oehler (300, 39.36, 19th); Rob Golightly (600, 1:35.26, 29th); Tom Calandra (pole vault, 10-9, ninth); and Felton (long jump, 19-5, 15th).

Oehler went 8.27 in the 55 hurdles for eighth. Johnson ran a 7.40 in the 55 dash to take 34th. Ryan Perry went 1:42.48 for 47th in the 600 and 3:03.17 to come in 33rd in the 1000. Golightly finished 27th in the 1000 in 3:02.02. Joe Seitz went 10:53.99 to take 20th in the 3200 and 5:10.60 to place 34th in the 1600. Hughes came in 27th in the long jump in 18-1.

North's 4x400 relay team of Oehler, Evan Hughes, Preston and Johnson took 20th in 3:52.14. Hughes leapt 18-1 in the long jump for 27th.

Williamsville South girls

Allie Van Buren led the Lady Billies with a first in the 300. She was timed in at 43.49.

Van Buren took third in the 55 hurdles in 9.04.

Kailyn and Kristina Arcury had good meets. Kailyn and Kristina hit personal best times in the 55 dash, running a 7.74 and 7.75, respectively.

Kristina Arcury placed second in the 55 hurdles in a personal best time of 8.87. Kailyn Arcury high jumped 4-8 for second.

Amanda Breymeier took third in the 1000 in a personal best time of 3:12.44.

Ashley Ferenczy placed sixth in the 600 in 1:44.58, just missing her personal record. Her younger sister, Alison Ferenczy, took 35th in the event in 1:55.96. Alison also qualified for the Section VI Championships in the 1500 racewalk in a personal best time of 9:16.72. She took 20th.

Colleen Hurtubise just missed a personal record in the 1500. Hurtubise finished in 5:38.15. She did set a personal record in the 3000, going 11:50.95 to place 11th.

Skye McClellan qualified for sectionals in the long jump with a personal best leap of 15-4.5. She took eighth.

Jennifer Lopez had personal bests in the shotput (35-0, second) and triple jump (29-2, 25th).

Meagan Monroe also just missed her best time in the 1500, finishing 33rd in 6:05.40.

Jenny Mooney took eighth in the 1500 racewalk in a personal best time of 8:33.60. She also went 3:28.87 to take 18th in the 1000.

Laura Johnston took 27th in the 3000 in a personal best time of 13:41.10. Rachel Zucker went 49.11 in the 300 to take 35th. Lindsey Porter took 24th in the shot put (25-0) and 41st in the long jump (12-7.75).

South's 4x400 relay team of Breymeier, Ashley Ferenczy, Van Buren and Mooney took fourth in 4:17.36. It is the second fastest time in the section.

South's 4x800 relay of Elisa Frazier Hurtubise, Monroe and MC Aungst took 15th in 11:12.76.

South boys

Alex Podvezko placed 10th in the 1000 in a personal best time of 2:52.72.

Podvezko also had a personal record in the 3200, taking 21st in 10:54.73.

Billies with personal best times were Dan Polis (55 hurdles, 8.79, 15th and 55 dash, 7.45, 40th); Nick Helmick (55 dash, 7.72, 47th); and Sammy Hasan (300, 46.27, 53rd).

Peter Galbo just missed his personal record in the 600 (1:39.04, 40th) and in the 1000 (3:03.07, 32nd). Bruce Hibler took 44th in the same event in 1:40.45.

John Stark came in 32nd in the 3200 (11:18.19) and 36th in the 1600 (5:11.69).

RJ Grampp took 32nd in the 55 hurdles in 9.88. He leaped a personal best in the triple jump with a 35-5.25 to take 29th. Reed Corbett also had a personal record in the triple jump with a 31-10.25 good for 34th overall.

South's 4x800 relay team of Podvezko, Galbo, Hibler and Stark ran personal best split times under 2:20 to finish with a personal best time of 9:05.35.

South's 4x400 relay of Polis, Grampp, Helmick and Nick Hoffman came in 28th in 4:03.21. In the long jump, Hoffman went 14-11.25 to take 50th and Harrison Sinatra was 53rd in 14-6.

The North and South boys and girls teams will each compete in the Western New York relays starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Fredonia State College.

The North girls took third last year. Blake said he is hoping his girls come in first.
