South bowlers win Williamsville Cup
Boys win handily, North girls beat Lady Billies by one pin

Williamsville South's boys bowling team roared to victory in the Williamsville Cup last Thursday at Transit Lanes.

South defeated Williamsville North and Williamsville East in the five-man competition. South had 2,797 pins followed by North (2,479) and East (2,156).

South has won the boys' competition in the Williamsville Cup nine out of the last 10 years.

"We've had our ups and downs this year, defeating first place teams and losing to last place teams, but we are definitely on the upside as we swing into the last two weeks of the season and playoff competition," said South coach Rick Newton. "This was a great win for us and we look forward to the upcoming ECIC Rolloffs and Section VI Championships."

Boys rolloffs are Monday and sectionals are Thursday at Airport Lanes.

South junior Alex Petrie had a high set of 675 with a 247 high game.

"Alex has been a consistent performer all year and he just keeps getting better," said Newton.

Billies' freshman Tony Cirbus had the high game of the competition with a 265.

"Tony has been a strong bowler all year and has consistently improved," said Newton.

The South girls team lost to North by one pin, 2,538-2,537.

South's Tricia Kent had high game and set with a 234 and 564 but due to Williamsville Cup rules, her high game was awarded to Maureen O'Brien of North, who had a 215. O'Brien also had high set with a 556.

"Kent and her sister Becca (558 total pins) and Rachel Broadart (512 total pins) have been consistently high performers for the girls team and have contributed to the great league record of the team," said Newton.

Other girls who bowled that day for North were Heather Lewandowski, Allison Pieri, Lindsay Griffo, Sarah Zimmer, and Jackie Vetrano.

The combined boys' and girls' teams from South won the overall Williamsville Cup with 5,334 total pins. North finished second with 5,017 pins; East was third with 4,245.

Amherst Central boys The Tigers are 3-8 with one match remaining, a home contest against Cheektowaga at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Airport Lanes.

The Tigers split its two recent matches, falling 5-2 against Depew last Thursday at Broadway Sports Center, and defeating Springville, 7-0, on Monday at Cascade Lanes.

Amherst was tied with Depew, 2-2, and trailed by five pins after the second game, but the Wildcats' "A" and "B" team each won the third game, 840-716 and 723-721, to pick up the win.

Brandon Jeffords led the Tigers with a 631 set, including games of 237 and 233. Eric Michalski added a 603 set and a high game of 226. Justin Garus shot 567. Dean Sny- der rolled a 564.

Joe Schwamborn led off the Depew "A" team with a 649 set. Kevin Alajko bowled a 589 set.

Amherst dominated Springville, winning all three games and total pin count.

Jeffords led the Tigers with a 591 set and 211 game. Snyder led Amherst with a 212.

Entering the Springville match, Michalski led Amherst with a 201.20 average followed by Garus (186.69) and Jeffords (183.69).

After the Cheektowaga match, a special ceremony will be held to honor the seniors.
