Sharks show no rust against Starpoint Sacred Heart hadn't played a basketball game in 13 days but there was no rust on the Sharks against Starpoint. The Sharks took a 30-14 lead into halftime and beat Starpoint, 60-32, last Thursday at Villa Maria Academy. "I was worried about the big layoff but I was pleased with the way we came out quickly and aggressively," said Sharks coach Sister Maria Pares. "I was pleased with their effort." Alycia Pontello led Sacred Heart with 10 points and four rebounds. Sam Arena added 10 points and four rebounds. Krystal Watson, Liz Tramposch and Haley Pickett each scored eight points. Watson also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists, Tramposch grabbed 10 rebounds and added one assist, and Pickett hauled in three rebounds. Devon Hornung added six points, two rebounds and five assists. Natalie Coppola didn't score but had three rebounds and a team-high seven assists. Katie Colton led Starpoint with eight points. One hundred twenty dollars were raised for Coaches versus Cancer. Sacred Heart began a stretch of five Monsignor Martin Association league games on Monday with a 63-50 upset loss to Mount Mercy. Sacred Heart is ranked third in Western New York large schools. The Sharks jumped out to a 10-0 lead but the Magic took a 21-17 advantage into halftime. Watson led the Sharks with 22 points, 15 rebounds and two assists. Mercy (11-6, 8-3) had three players in double figures - Melissa Graham (21), Mary Kate Kubera (16) and Meg Recktenwald (15). Mercy upset Sacred Heart for the MMA title last year. The Sharks beat Mercy, 56-40, on Jan. 11. Sacred Heart (14-5, 7-2) plays at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Nichols and at Holy Angels on Saturday. The Sharks close out the regular season at Nardin at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11 and St. Mary's of Lancaster at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at Villa Maria. |
