Lady Tigers avenge early-season loss The Amherst Central girls basketball team won its 11th game of the season and avenged an early season loss by defeating Maryvale, 47-38, at Amherst last Tuesday. The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 13-4 first-quarter lead with Eva Lankes scoring six points and Jenny Newhouse adding five points. Lankes finished with 14 points; Newhouse had 11. Maryvale chipped away in the second quarter to trail, 21-14, at halftime and, 32-24, after the third quarter. Amherst shot 7 for 10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Amherst lost to Maryvale by seven points earlier in the season. Amy Simon and Jequana Roberts each tossed in seven points. The Lady Tigers closed out the week with a 49-43 loss last Friday at Starpoint. In the first half, Starpoint's Katie Colton scored 14 points and, trailing 26-14 by halftime, Amherst made a defensive adjustment to hold her scoreless in the second half. Amherst battled back in the second half to get it within five points. Starpoint's Kathie Kreppenneck went 5 of 6 from the foul line to seal the victory. Newhouse tallied a career-high 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Simon had six points. Elana Korn and Casey McGuire each chipped in five points. Amherst (11-6, 6-5) hosts Pioneer, the No. 1 team in Class A in New York State, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. |
