Seven enter North Athletic Wall of Honor

Some of the top past names from Williamsville North athletics were inducted last Friday into the school's Athletic Wall of Honor in a ceremony between the North girls and boys varsity basketball games with Lancaster.
Earning the honors were Sam O'Leary ('78), Cheryl Julicher ('99), Joe Guercio, Lloyd Cassidy, Donald Griebner ('76), Wendy E. Domster ('76) and David J. O'Leary ('73).
Sam O'Leary
Sam O'Leary was a four-year letter winner and selected as the only freshman on the varsity team.
He qualified for the New York State Swimming Championships four straight years and placed in the top six each year.
A captain his junior and senior year, O'Leary was state champion in the 100-yard butterfly in 1978. He established several school and pool records.
O'Leary received a full scholarship at the University of North Carolina Wilmington where he was Eastern Seaboard Champion in 1981 and 1982.
He was also a NCAA Division I All-American in the 100 fly. He is the UNCW record holder in the 100 and 200 fly.
O'Leary was inducted into the UNCW Wall of Fame in 1998.
O'Leary is general manager for Onslow Beach Island Resort at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
Cheryl Julicher
Cheryl Julicher earned varsity letters in softball and basketball.
She was selected All-State, All-Western New York and All-ECIC in softball. She was a seven-time scholar athlete, team captain and twice named MVP. She led the team with a .546 batting average and a .997 fielding percentage.
Julicher received a scholarship to play softball at Syracuse University. There, she established school records for home runs, runs scored, RBIs, slugging percentage, hit by pitches, and walks. She committed only one error in 277 chances. She was a Big East All-Academic All- Star.
Julicher had a year of eligibility remaining and set single season records for home runs and RBIs at Niagara University. She was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week, First Team All-MAAC and MAAC Player of the Year Runner-up.
Julicher is a police officer for the Town of Amherst.
Joe Guercio
Joe Guercio became the first baseball coach at North.
He has coached for over four decades and his teams have won ten league championships. He has coached numerous league All-Stars, All-WNY players, and collegiate players.
Guercio has also coached American Legion, AAABA and Buffalo Muny League, competing in many regional and national tournaments. His legion team won Erie County and Eastern Regional Tournaments, finishing seventh at the national championships.
Guercio was a professional scout for several major league baseball teams, including the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals.
Honors and distinctions that he has received include Buffalo Muny Manager of the Year in 1965, Christy Mathewson's Presidential Award in 1982 and the Achievement Award from the Buffalo Bisons in 2003.
Lloyd Cassidy
Lloyd Cassidy was the first Spartan swimming and diving coach.
He coached the men's team until 1986 and the women's team from 1970 to 1980. During his tenure at North, Cassidy led the Spartans to dozens of ECIC and Section VI team titles. The men's team was ranked in the top five statewide for over ten years and ranked No. 1 for three years.
Cassidy's swimmers and divers set numerous league, section and state records and captured dozens of individual and relay state championships as well as All-American recognitions. Many of his athletes went on to NCAA All-American successes and careers in aquatics.
Donald Griebner
Donald Griebner earned seven varsity letters in three sports and was captain of the baseball and volleyball teams.
Griebner was a first team All-League and All-WNY in baseball, leading his team to the 1975 division title. He was named North's outstanding athlete in 1976.
A four-year starter and letter winner on the University at Buffalo baseball team, Griebner was named captain his senior year. He pitched a combined no-hitter versus Colgate and established a UB record for most shutouts in a season and tied for third in shutouts in a career. He was selected to the All-SUNY team.
Griebner was inducted into the WNY Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
He is president of Real Property Services LLC.
Wendy E. Domster '76
An all-around athlete, Wendy E. Domster participated in seven varsity sports.
She established school records in the discus and shot put, placing sixth at Track and Field Nationals in the shot put. She was named Williamsville North Athlete of the year.
Domster received an athletic scholarship for Cazenovia College and was captain of the volleyball and tennis teams.
She also attended Alfred University where she was a member of the soccer and basketball teams and captain of the 1982 state champion women's volleyball team.
Domster was inducted into Alfred University's Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
She has also been a team member for the 1996 British Columbia ECO-Challenge Race and three times internationally ranked as a Firefighter's Combat Challenge Athlete.
Domster is a firefighter in the City of Santa Clara Fire Department.
David J. O'Leary
David J. O'Leary was state champion in the 100-yard backstroke and 200 medley relay.
As captain of the swim team, he was North's first All-American swimmer. He established school records in the 100 back which has lasted for 35 years. He was an All-American in the 100 back and 200 medley relay.
O'Leary received a full scholarship from Tulane University. He was captain of the swim team and school record holder in the 100 back.
O'Leary is president of Directional Road Boring, Inc.
