Wins have been hard to come by for the Williamsville South Federation hockey team but all of the Billies' hard work paid off with a 4-1 win over Amherst last Thursday on the Amherst Pepsi Center Feature Rink.

"It was very rewarding," said South coach Sean Green. "I felt if we kept up the hard work it would pay dividends and it did. The guys were real excited."

South (2-12, 2-9) scored three goals in four minutes in the second period. Senior defender Dustin Ditallio scored unassisted at 10:51. Leo Schultz made it 2-0 from Mike Mangione and Jon Sherman at 6:38.

"Jon pinched hard on the boards, outworked Amherst down low around the goal crease and Leo got the rebound and put it in," said Green.

Trevor Clark scored 11 seconds later from Luigi Parlato and Brian Stachura.

"It was nice to get back-to-back goals and a lead going into the third period because we've had to come back so many times in the third this season," said Green. "It was nice to feel the energy in the locker room between periods."

Dan Hubbard cut South's lead to 3-1 with 3:21 remaining but South forward Justin Dipasquale scored an empty-net goal from goalie Brian D'Angelo with one second remaining. It was the first time South had scored four goals in a game this season. D'Angelo finished with 22 saves.

"He made some point blank saves early on," said Green. "He played really well."

South outshot Amherst, 28-23. South faces Sweet Home at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
