Ward will run for Senate's 61st District

Wa rd
On the same day Sen. Mary Lou Rath, R-Amherst, announced she would not seek re-election, Amherst Council Member Dan Ward, a Democrat, said he will run for the post.

Ward, a former Amherst town supervisor and Erie County legislator, announced his candidacy for the 61st District seat on Monday at Loughran's Restaurant in Snyder.

He said he felt an open seat would give him the best opportunity for election in a year that will be good for Democrats.

Ward is a Williamsville lawyer, with 34 years of experience. He was also the 2003 Democratic candidate for Erie County executive. He lost to former executive Joel Giambra.

"The state Legislature makes laws, and I have a lot of experience in legislative draftsmanship," he said.

At the state level, Ward said there is a need for Industrial Development Agency and Thruway Authority reform.

"We need a lot more passion, activity and leadership from this Senate seat. I have a huge agenda, and want to return this office to the people of this district as a tool to provide solutions for their myriad problems," he said. "We need a Senator who is going to work the office with energy and enthusiasm."

Ward said his years of experience as a lawyer would help him as a senator.

"I know well where the law must be changed to make sense, be fairer, and most of all, make sure this Senate district gets its fair share of state government spending and programs," Ward said.

He added that spending and taxes need to be addressed.
