League's winter season opens The Winter 2008 season in Buffalo In-line Hockey League Group began this past Saturday. The league is larger than ever, growing to 18 teams over two divisions with players from almost every town in Western New York. Major division Reds 11, Warriors 8 A high-scoring game against two first-year goaltenders, Scott Sciolino and Austin Newman, both from Tonawanda, leading the Reds. Blackhawks 8, Killer Pandas 4 The Hawks took an early 2-0 lead and did not look back. Justin Swan (Tonawanda) had five tallies. Vikings 10, Stealth 2 The Vikes put on a passing clinic as all 10 goals drew an assist. David Campuzano had four goals and four assists to lead the Vikes. Jake Bass scored three times and Nick Brezinski tossed in four assists. Ian Durgan shined in net. Firestorm 8, Snipers 6 Brad Owens (Tonawanda) picked up where he left off last season with six points fueling the Firestorm. Mulecats 8, Crush 5 The Crush stayed in this game until late despite a depleted bench. Calvin Waley, Doug Smith (Cheektowaga) and company were just too much for the Rob Russell's cats. Junior division Penguins 8, Sharks 4 Zac Wieand (Amherst) had a nice fall season and started the winter with four goals, teaming with Dominic Santoro and goaltender Ricky Jacobs and earning the win for the Pens. Gladiators 9, Maroons 3 Nick Antoniadis (Amherst) was a first team all league selection in the fall and showed no sign of stopping, combining with Ben Speyer (Amherst) for eight goals. Devils 9, Knights 7 The Devils needed three late goals from Vicram Goel (Amherst) to overcome the hard working Knights. Kevin Krawczyck (Tonawanda) and rookie Josh Rankin sparked the Knights. Orangemen 8, Capital 2 Jacob Schrieber (Williamsville) had a natural hat trick, scoring the first three goals of the game, to help his team build a 5-0 lead at the end of the first period. Netminder John Allen was stout in his first BIHG game.
