Amherst 12U girls continue good play over weekend

Although the 12U girls gave up two power-play goals, they otherwise played a strong game versus Stoney Creek, losing 2-1.

Maddy Utz continued to display great goaltending by stonewalling the visitors from Canada in five on five play and gave the Lady Knights a chance to tie the game in the third period.

Offensively, Amherst was led by Jessica Gates, who scored her first goal of the season by slamming home a rebound after great pressure from linemates Emma Ruggiero and Sami Johnson created a mad scramble in front of the Canadians' net.

Amherst 2, Rochester 0

Maddy Utz and Teresa Meosky combined to shut out Rochester on Sunday afternoon in Perinton. While they made many difficult saves, they were aided by the strong defensive play of their blue-liners, led by veterans Caitlin Mitchell, Karli Weidner and Caroline Soh, and youngsters, Ella Frauenhofer, Amelia Gajewski and Lily Markley.

Jessica Gates gave the Lady Knights the only goal they would need by scoring in the second period on a rebound, her second such goal in as many days. Toni Warnick added an insurance goal midway through the third period.
