Wellness Institute offers variety of winter classes

The City of Buffalo Division for Senior Services invites older adults to join the "Passport to Wellness" program classes.

The program is a Wellness Institute community health partnership that promotes active lifestyles and prevention of diabetes and other chronic diseases of the older adult population.

The moderate physical activity classes enhance health and help improve quality of life.

"The passport program is great for anyone who wants to be more physically active or for those who want to keep fit and feeling good," said program leader Jenna Brinkworth.

"Come to your local City of Buffalo Senior Center and take advantage of these fun opportunities," said Brinkworth.

The classes vary in length and content, but all include light stretching, easy toning and simple activities to get you moving.

These classes are running through February:

"Passport to Tai Chi," with Dr. Penny Klein, will run from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Fridays at the Autumnwood Senior Center, 1800 Clinton St., Buffalo.

"Passport Lite and Easy" will run from 11 to 11:40 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Lincoln Senior Center, 10 Quincy St., Buffalo.

"Mix it up" will run from 11 a.m. to noon Mondays at the Richmond Summer Senior Center, 337 Summer St., Buffalo.

ALS Association holds monthly meeting

The ALS Association, Upstate New York chapter, holds monthly support group meetings for Buffalo area patients and families living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Support Group will hold a meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at the Eggertsville/Snyder branch of the Amherst Libraries, 4622 Main St., Amherst.

The month of January is National Blood Donor Month, and once again, the Church of Scientology is partnering with the American Red Cross to bolster its blood reserves in Western New York.

The event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 in the Community Room on the fifth floor of the Church of Scientology, 836 Main St., at Virginia Street, in Buffalo.

The church will be providing lunch for all donors, and Dunkin' Donuts will give each donor a certificate for a free 1-pound bag of the company's coffee.

All interested parties should call Tiffany Scott at the Church of Scientology at 856-3910 to make a reservation to donate. It only takes about 45 minutes in total to complete all paperwork and donate. Bring proper photo identification.

La Leche holds monthly meeting
