Maturing Billies upset Flames
Boys basketball

      The Williamsville South boys basketball team is growing up in a hurry. The Billies, who opened the season 1-3, improved to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in ECIC Division II with a stunning 70-65 upset last Friday over its biggest rival, Williamsville East, at East. The loss dropped East to 7-4, 3-2.

East's wrestling success at North tourney continues

      Williamsville East's wrestling team continued its great year on the mat with a second place finish on Saturday at the seventh annual Williamsville North Invitational Tournament held at Williamsville North High School. East posted a team score of 141. Eden was first with 177.5 points.

      The Amherst Dynamo made its 2008 debut in the Epic Winter Soccer League on Jan. 9. Scores by Zachary Lipp and Curtis Snyder helped this retooled team earn a 2-2 tie against the Akron Tigers in a U-15 indoor game.

      The Williamsville South wrestling team came close to its third win of the season but was upset 38-25 by Lake Shore last Wednesday. Winning by pinfall at 135 was Nick Green. Green took down Jarrod Dziedzic early in the match and controlled it for the entire first period.

      Defense has been the big key for the success of the Sweet Home girls basketball team, and its defense has placed them at the top of ECIC Division II. The Lady Panthers (8-3, 6-0) knocked off Hamburg (6-5, 5-1), 47-41, last Thursday at Sweet Home.

Amherst Central extends win streak to five

      Since a loss to Pioneer on Dec. 20, Amherst Central has been one of the hottest girls basketball teams in the area. The Lady Tigers (8-4, 4-3) have rolled off five consecutive victories, including road wins over Williamsville South, 50-35, last Tuesday and Tonawanda, 54-44, last Thursday.

North almost upsets top-ranked Jamestown

      The Level 8 girls from Stumpf's Gymnastics turned in solid performances at the Graffiti Invitational. Thirteen-year-old Rachel Kistner's score of 36.675 won her the all-around. Shannon Martinsen earned a sixth place finish on beam and finished sixth overall for the 12-year-olds.
