Senior Foundation awards grants

The board of directors of the Amherst Senior Citizens Foundation awarded more than $29,000 to various agencies in 2007 in order to improve the quality of life for senior citizens in the Town of Amherst.

Board President Catharine M. Weiss said the board is appreciative of the donations received during the past year from hundreds of businesses and individuals, without which the foundation would be unable to make such awards.

The foundation again contributed funds to Amherst Meals on Wheels in an effort to help keep the cost of the meals at a reasonable level for the program's clients and to aid with software expenses.

The Amherst Meals on Wheels program is not affiliated with Meals on Wheels of Western New York and receives no government funding. Almost 400 volunteers with Amherst Meals on Wheels drive more than 55,000 miles annually to serve more than 350 clients.

Additionally, the foundation sponsored the annual Holiday Happening at the Center for Senior Services, as well as the annual volunteer recognition breakfast and luncheon. Also, the foundation was able to donate $10,000 to Amherst Senior Transportation Services toward the cost of a new van.

Anyone interested in making a tax-deductible contribution to the Amherst Senior Citizens Foundation Inc. can send a check to the foundation at 370 John James Audubon Parkway, Amherst, NY 14228. The foundation can also be reached at 636-3050, ext. 125.
