Benefit planned for Flor family A benefit for Amherst residents Bonnie and Ray Flor, both of whom are battling cancer, has been organized by family and friends. It will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20 at St. Mary's Church Parish Center, 6919 Transit Road in Swormville. Bonnie was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in May 2000. After several surgeries and years of chemotherapy, she continues to battle the disease. She almost lost her fight twice because of life threatening complications, family friend Mary Pitirri said. Because of the disease, Bonnie has been unable to work steadily, and in June 2007 she had to retire, losing her medical coverage. Friends call Ray a pillar of strength and support, but in August 2007 he was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer with metastasis to the brain. He has had gamma knife treatment for five tumors in his brain and is currently receiving radiation treatment and chemotherapy. He is also unable to work or drive. The Flors have been left with significant medical expenses and no income. For more information, visit www.florbenefit. com. |
