Join the fight against Walgreens

I am writing this letter in response to and support of a letter written by Karen Coia in December, titled "No Walgreens at Hopkins and Klein."

The corner of Hopkins and Klein is part of a neighborhood. If we sit by and allow a giant Walgreens to be built on one corner, next thing you know, the vacant medical building on the opposite corner will be demolished to build another large drugstore. It seems that within our community we already have numerous choices and options for drugstores. The Walgreens at the corner of Maple and Transit is close enough for anyone that needs that particular store. A local pharmacy, Rite-Aid, and Eckerd are all within a close distance.

As a parent, teacher, coach and active member of this community, I would like to encourage other parents, teachers, coaches, Scout leaders, and school leaders to use this as a learning opportunity for our children. We need to gather together as a community and go to the Amherst Town Board meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22 at to speak out against the demolition of four viable businesses (Mobil, Say Cheese Pizza, Clearfield Liquor, Vinsans Salon) to make way for the construction of a giant Walgreens. Use this opportunity to introduce your kids to our local government; show them how to be part of the process and part of the solution. Bring your families to the Town Board meeting. For more information or to obtain a lawn sign, please contact Karen Coia at 688-2621.
