Man accused of breaking arm, legs of infant girl

William Smielecki
Amherst police have arrested a Denrose Drive man for allegedly breaking a 6-day-old girl's legs and later her arm.

Assistant Chief Timothy Green said William Smielecki, 23, was arrested on Jan. 3 and charged with felony assault in the second degree and endangering the welfare of a minor.

He is accused of breaking the infant's legs on Dec. 19, six days after she was born.

Green said the police are still investigating why the injuries went unnoticed for two weeks. It wasn't until Jan. 3 when the mother, 21, of the same Denrose Drive address, took the child to the doctor after noticing something was wrong with the infant's arm.

Smielecki is also accused of breaking the infant's arm.

The doctor reported the case, and the infant was transported to Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo for treatment.

Detective Tom Westbrook was assigned to the investigation. After questioning Smielecki about the injuries, he was arrested.

Smielecki was arraigned in Village of Williamsville Court by Judge Jeffrey Voelkl on Jan. 4 and held on $10,000 cash bail.

His felony hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday in Amherst Town Court.

An investigation is continuing.
