North gains respect at NCCC Tournament

      Williamsville North's wrestling team has been good for the last couple of years but a 12th place showing out of 39 schools at the 27th annual Niagara Frontier Wrestling Officials Tournament this past weekend made other schools take notice.

East wrestling dominates Canisius
      Williamsville East easily improved its dual meet record to 5-1 after dominating Canisius, 54-9, last Thursday at Canisius. The Flames only lost two matches throughout the entire match. Jacob Beichner (125), Max Cohen (130), Steve Meyer (160), and Will Kelly (189) all recorded first period pins.

Flames to host inaugural homecoming, alumni match
      Williamsville East loved hosting a homecoming football game in the fall that they are trying it in the winter with the wrestling team. The inaugural Williamsville East wrestling homecoming alumni match will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at East High School, 151 Paradise Road, East Amherst.

      The Williamsville South and Williamsville North indoor track teams hit the road for the second time in as many weeks, competing at the Southern Tier High School Invitational on Saturday at Cornell University. The event featured 54 schools, 1560 athletes in track events and 600 in field events.

Panthers tame Hamburg
      The Sweet Home Panther boys bowling team defeated Hamburg, 5-2, on Thursday at Manor II Lanes. Peter Schaefer led the team with a 663 set. Schaefer had games of 255, 214 and 194. Shaun Louis was the only other 600 series shot, rolling a 610. Louis was consistent with games of 202, 211 and 197.

Flames need double overtime to win at Hamburg

      Peter Heim's 16-foot jump shot at the buzzer lifted Williamsville East to a huge 61-59 double overtime road win at Hamburg last Friday. Junior guard Kevin Castine brought the ball up the court, wove through a couple of Hamburg defenders, and fed Heim on the left side of the baseline.

      Williamsville East used a nice start to defeat Williamsville South in an ECIC II girls basketball game last Friday at East. The Lady Flames (7-4, 3-2) jumped out to a 15-9 lead after the first quarter and 29-16 advantage by halftime en route to a 53-39 victory.

      A hard-played and exciting game between the Mite Devils and Penguins ended in a 5-5 tie. The Penguins' Colin Blatz tied the score with seven seconds remaining in regulation. In the first period, the Penguins' Liam Gallagher, Allison Attea, and Sean Balcerzak scored three unassisted goals.
