Weber wins second wrestling tourney of season

Amherst Central senior Matt Weber pushed his unbeaten mark to 13-0 after winning the 152-pound division at last Friday's Maryvale Invitational.

It was Weber's second tournament victory this year.

Weber defeated Steve Holtz of St. Francis, 5-0, in the first round, pinned Albert Buck of Niagara Falls in the second period in the second round and Jim Litz of Maryvale, 9-1, in the final.

Corey Damon finished 3-2 at 189. Pete Battaglia and Sean Cunningham each went 2-2 at 215 and 135, respectively.

"Cunningham is a sophomore who has been a pleasant surprise this year," said Amherst coach Dennis Bauer. "We knew he would be good, but his maturity has allowed him to progress a little faster than we expected."

The Tigers' recent dual was a 33-27 loss on Dec. 18 at St. Joe's.

Max Legierski pinned Brian Herzog at 112. Nick Celano beat Brian Harper, 3-0, at 119. Cunningham pinned Brian O'Connell at 140. Weber pinned Mike Duguay at 152. Brian Rice defeated Tyler Beresford, 9-7, at 160. Damon knocked off T.J. Leber, 9-5, at 189.

Amherst is 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the league.

"A dual meet usually comes down to pins earned by each team, and this match was no exception," said Bauer. "Though pleased with their effort, I was disappointed that we gave up so many pins."

On Saturday, the Amherst JV team competed in the Eden JV Round Robin tourney.

Rice (160) and Tom Trabert (112) took home first-place trophies. Rice was 5-0. Jamie Mullane took a second at 130. Nick Pantano (112), Jason Williams (125) and Pat Donovan (130) each took third.
