Chief: cuts to police budget threaten safety
      "We need funding put back into the budget; it's critically important to public safety," Amherst Police Chief John C. Askey said Tuesday. Upon reviewing the tentative budget, Askey became concerned about cuts made by Supervisor Satish Mohan and is planning to speak with the Town Board members to restore funding.

Police question man following suspicious person complaints
      The Amherst Police Department's Special Victims Unit identified and interviewed a 52-year-old Hamburg man in connection with two incidents of suspicious activity that occurred in the Town of Amherst. On Sept. 22 and 23, the individual, driving a black SUV, approached two young girls and attempted to engage them in conversation.

      Bee Group Newspapers will not publish letters to the editor, Bee Heard calls or political briefs on candidates or issues involved in the Nov. 4 election after the Oct. 22/23 editions. The editorial deadline for those editions is Friday, Oct. 17. This election policy does not pertain to paid advertising.

East's Shifflet to enter Greater Buffalo Sports HOF

      Williamsville East football coach Joe Shifflet has been inducted into several sports Hall of Fames over his legendary coaching career, but nothing tops his latest induction. Shifflet is one of 13 inductees for the 2008 Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is from 7 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at HSBC Arena.

Mercy Flight founder recognized by state for supporting EMS organizations
      Trained as a combat medic, Douglas Baker of Williamsville was working for the military when he first thought of the idea for Mercy Flight. "I was riding in a helicopter as a medic in training and thought this would be terrific to help the Western New York community," he said.

Amherst, Cheektowaga police use tip to make drug bust
      An anonymous tip regarding a suspicious crate at a Cheektowaga shipping company led to the arrest of three people — two from Buffalo and a third who is an Amherst resident. The Cheektowaga Police Vice, Gambling and Narcotics Unit investigated the tip with the assistance of Amherst investigators and K-9 units.

Beacon Center offers young adult program at Amherst location
      Beacon Center, an outpatient chemical-dependency treatment agency with a location in Amherst, is offering a young adult program for teens who need help dealing with an alcohol or drug abuse program. Often, teenage substance abuse will manifest itself in social, academic or behavioral problems.

Town leaf, brush pick-up underway
      Amherst residents may continue to put their brush out for pick-up until Nov. 30. All brush in accordance with the Refuse Department guidelines will be picked up during resident's weekly pick-ups. Leaf piles may contain leaves and grass clippings only. Mixed piles of brush and leaves will not be picked up because they cannot be composted.

Applications for Winter Day Camp will be accepted Oct. 20-24
      The Amherst Youth Board will begin accepting applications for its Winter Day Camp programs, for children ages 5-11, next week. Halloween show planned at North's planetarium
      The Williamsville Space Lab Planetarium, 1595 Hopkins Road, will hold two Halloween Shows on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Shows are at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. and targeted for ages 4 to 9. Attendees will join Holly, a student witch, and Jack, a pumpkin comedian, as they explore Halloween history and traditions, the fall and winter constellations and the phases of the moon.

Dump truck overturns, spilling hot asphalt onto I-290
      Amherst Police responded to an overturned dump truck on westbound Interstate 290 at the Niagara Falls Boulevard exit at 3:11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. The 2006 Western Star dump truck was loaded with hot asphalt, which ended up on the far left lane of the Youngman Highway.

Trailway will close for UB homecoming
      The Town of Amherst Recreation Department is notifying residents that the Ellicott Creek Trailway will be closed between John James Audubon Parkway and St. Rita's Lane from 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, until approximately 2 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, for the University at Buffalo's annual homecoming carnival.
