      Nanci M. Monaco of Williamsville, an associate professor of educational foundations at Buffalo State College, was honored at the annual Academic Convocation ceremony in September at Rockwell Hall. Monaco was one of two recipients of the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

      Robert McCue, owner of Creekside Hot Tubs and Sauna Co., says the difference between his small business and larger ones is customer service. And he would know; he's been at it for 25 years. First opening the business in his garage on Reist Street, McCue moved to the current location at 5981 Main St., almost 20 years ago.

      Alphonso O'Neil-White, president and chief executive officer of HealthNow, was honored with the Business Executive of the Year Award at the 40th annual Canisius College Business Awards Dinner on Oct. 14 at Salvatore's Italian Gardens.

      The Amherst Chamber of Commerce will hold its Business After Hours event from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Verbena Restaurant, 930 Maple Road. Business After Hours is a monthly, casual networking event sponsored by an Amherst chamber member.

Dr. Elmer takes his mission to Africa with Mercy Ships
      Dr. Thomas Elmer, a board-certified physician and partner with Fichte, Endl & Elmer Eyecare in Amherst, will be rejoining Mercy Ships for a trip to Africa at the end of October. Volunteering four times previously, Elmer has served on extended missions to Sierra Leone in 2003 and 2004 and then to Liberia in 2005 and 2006.
