North grad Udwadia coaches NY Buzz to first title
      Since joining World TeamTennis 14 years ago, the New York Buzz had made three WTT finals appearances but never won a championship. Apparently, all they were missing was Jay Udwadia as their coach.

     LEARN TO SKATE — 2007 Williamsville North graduate Mike Jaszka, left, helps Brandon Lukomski, 6, during a learn-to-skate session last Saturday at the Amherst Pepsi Center Olympic Rink. Jaszka played JV hockey for North and plays for St. John Fisher College's club hockey team. The learn-to-skate program is sponsored by Amherst Youth Hockey and Dick's Sporting Goods for new skaters ranging in age from 4 to 14. The program will also be held from 9 to 9:30 a.m., 9:35 to 10:05 a.m. and 10:10 to 10:40 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 and 30, at the Pepsi Center Olympic Rink. New season of Buffalo Soccer Academy approaching
      Buffalo Soccer Academy starts its fourth season of operation at Sahlen's Sports Park, 7070 Seneca St., Elma, beginning in September. BSA is announcing their intention to become a "club" by fielding competitive teams for the upcoming year in addition to their well-respected training program.

Mel Ott 11U fares well at Williamsport tournament
      The Mel Ott White was a game short of appearing in the New York State final four. The team lost to Auburn, 9-4, in the final of the Williamsport 11U baseball sectional tournament held in Elmira, N.Y. Pitcher Kevin Charleson shut down Auburn for four innings, allowing only three runs. Mike Torrillo and Brandon Pistner had three hits each and Tommy Brummer had a pair.

Team New Era 11U grabs WNY Boys of Summer League title
      Team New Era 11U defeated the Clarence Renegades, 11-4, at Memorial Park in Clarence to become the 2008 Western New York Boys of Summer League champions in the 11U division. Team New Era went 10-4-1 in regular season play and earned a spot in the league's playoffs.

      The second annual Double T Archery Club Metric 600 Round Shoot will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24 at Double T Archery Club, 1110 North French Road, Amherst. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The shoot is open to classic recurve, compound freestyle, and traditional archers.

Buffalo United Soccer wins national titles
      The Buffalo United Soccer Club had three teams advance to the US Club National Cup Finals tournament, held July 26-29 in Virginia Beach, Va., with its U15 and U16 girls squads coming home with championships. The U15 team went undefeated over the course of the weekend en route to its title.

Heat wins 12U Mel Ott softball crown
      The Heat defeated the Force, 11-6, to win the Mel Ott 12U softball championship. The Heat rallied for six runs in the second. With the score tied at 6-6 in the fifth, Kara Landberg walked and Hannah Gordon bunted her home. Kathryn Rogemoser, Allison Souter and Rachel Latorre added insurance runs. Souter shut out the Force in the final inning to save the victory.

New photo policy in place
      As of July 1, 2008, The Bee will institute a new policy on send-in photos for youth sports. The Bee will run a team photo only once during a season. This applies to baseball, softball, basketball, football, gymnastics, soccer, hockey and any other sport.

Lou Gehrig 10U travel softball wins Mel Ott tournament
      The Lou Gehrig Lasers 10U softball team defeated the Lancaster Depew Heat, 7-3, to win the Mel Ott 10U Tournament held July 26-27. Pitcher Lauren Curtis had a strong game on the mound, striking out 13 batters and receiving the tournament MVP award. Elle Garrity led the way with an RBI in the seventh to seal the victory.

     FIRST-PLACE FINISH — The Mel Ott Little League 10U boys team finished its season in style, winning the Buffalo Wings Summer Bash the weekend of Aug. 8-10. Mel Ott defeated teams from Erie, Pa. and Amherst, Ohio, and came from behind to defeat the tournament host Buffalo Wings, 6-5, for the championship. For the season, the team posted a tournament record of 9-6 and finished as runner-up in the District 2 Little League World Series Qualifier. BIHG's Campuzano helps hockey team to fourth
      Buffalo In-line Hockey Group's David Campuzano led "Team New York" to a fourth place finish in the highly competitive "State Wars" hockey tournament held last week in Cincinnati, Ohio. "Team New York" played superb hockey before losing in the semifinals to eventual winner "Team Michigan", 2-1. The winning goal came with only 31 seconds left in regulation.

     STINGING THEIR OPPONENTS — The WNY Sting 12U softball team recently won both the Niagara Frontier League Playoff Championship and the Softball in the Hills ASA Qualifier Tournament in West Virginia, on top of placing second at both the Softball in the Hive and Lou Gehrig Summer Classic Tournaments earlier this summer. A-Turf Titans goes undefeated at national tournament
      The Western New York based A-Turf Titans 13U baseball team recently posted a 4-0 record in the Elite Championship Baseball Tournament (ECTB) National Championship Series hosted in the Allentown/Reading, Pa. area. The Titans beat their opponents by a collective 21-9 score in the 24-team tournament that featured outstanding teams from seven different states.

      Swimmers from the Town of Tonawanda recreation department team won the Willard J. Eisenhardt swim meet held Thursday, Aug. 7 at the Town of Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center. Recreation department teams from the City of Tonawanda and the Town of Amherst also competed.

Tryouts for Buffalo In-line Hockey Group's fall season slated
      Placement tryouts for the fall 2008 season of Buffalo In-line Hockey Group will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the EPIC Center, 2793 Wehrle Drive, Lancaster. Registration for Atom division players (birth dates of 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000) will be held at 7:30 a.m. with players on the rink at 8:30 a.m.
