      Monday's special meeting, arranged to allow the Amherst Town Board to vote on the expired police contract, was expected to be quick and easy, but it turned into a heated debate.

Verizon to offer cable in parts of town
      In September, portions of Amherst will have the choice of another cable provider - Veri- zon. Maureen Rasp-Glose, external affairs director for Western New York, said some 12,000 residents will have access to Verizon's fiber-optic FiOS system. The company is already offering Internet and telephone services.

'Ambassadors' make donation to African school
      An impoverished school in Zimbabwe continues to improve its mission, thanks to students at Sweet Home Middle School. Members of the school's Global Ambassadors Club presented a check in the amount of $1,500 to Leona Maponga on June 17. The funds were raised through sales at concession stands and craft shows.

Health care costs have risen 125 percent in 10 years
      It is no secret that health care costs cause a budget problem for municipalities, but Amherst Town Comptroller Darlene Carroll put the numbers in black and white for the board. (See editorial on page four) During her monthly presentation on Monday, Carroll provided the board with a 10-year comparison of budgets.

Teacher of the deaf retires after 33 years
      Thirty-three years after starting her career as a teacher of the deaf and hearing-impaired, one teacher has decided to close her books. Janet Richter of Williamsville celebrated her retirement with a party where many of her past students surprised her, she said.

Home burglary reported
      A Capen Boulevard resident called Amherst police at 2:40 a.m. Tuesday to report a burglary. The resident awoke to the sound of footsteps and called police. According to Assistant Chief Timothy Green, the suspect(s) entered the house through a window on the first floor, and then left through a side door with a laptop and digital camera.

When members of Michael's Angels participate in this Saturday's Ride for Roswell they will be doing so for a good friend who lost his battle with cancer when he was just 10 years old. Jeffrey Bochiechio said this will be the team's 12th ride in honor of Michael Augustyn, who passed away in 1995 after battling non-Hodgkins B-cell lymphoma. More...
