Lighting the way
     Amherst Police Officer Kenneth Klein leads a group of men and women from the department as he runs with the symbolic torch to lead the way down Niagara Falls Boulevard June 5 during the New York State Special Olympics torch run. The run began June 4 in Niagara Falls and will end June 12 in Binghamton, site of the event. Eggertsville Community Center nearing reality
      For the Eggertsville area, it has been a long series of steps toward having its own community center. (See editorial on page four) First came the idea. Back in 1990, when Joe Bachovchin was director of the Youth Board, it was realized that the area needed a center. In 1996, actual plans started to form.

Roundabouts may increase traffic safety
      A little more than 100 residents and business owners affected by the Harlem Road reconstruction project attended a public meeting June 3, hearing a presentation on the installation of roundabouts at two locations on the thoroughfare.

Special police unit responds to issues on west side of town
      The west side of town is the busiest for the Amherst police, so in response, they launched a Community Policing Unit. Lt. Ted DiNoto, in charge of the two officers running the unit, said it is a combination of patrol and community policing.
