      The Women for Joe Mesi Committee has been formed to ensure the women's voice is heard in Albany. Mesi is a Democratic candidate for New York State Senate in the 61st District. The kickoff event for "Women for Joe Mesi" will be held at the Clarence home of Mesi supporter Susan Banks on June 7. Mesi's campaign headquarters is at 2001 Niagara Falls Blvd.

Clothing drive ends June 6
      Dr. Brian A. Pokorski, of Chiropractic Lifestyle and WNY Disc Decompression Center, is collecting clothing, toys and small, usable household items from the community to send to missionaries in Nicaragua. Pokorski wants the community to show its support by donating to the cause before Friday, June 6.

Helping Roswell will leave a 'Sweet Taste' in the mouth
      Those who enjoy gooey treats will want to head to Eastern Hills Mall on June 7. Sweet Taste of Western New York will bring some of the best restaurants in the area together to offer their specialty desserts. Half of the proceeds from the event will go to Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Amherst residents named docents for Buffalo Tours
Williamsville tour June 7
      Richard and Priscilla O'Brien of Amherst attended the spring 2008 Buffalo Tours training class to become docents for several area walking tours. Docents, or tour guides, are trained and certified through a 10-week program of lectures, discussion and on-site visits to historic sites, often national landmarks.

GOP Committee endorses Ranzenhofer for Senate
      The Erie County Republican Committee endorsed County Legislator Mike Ranzenhofer today to replace state Sen. Mary Lou Rath, who is retiring at the end of this year. "Mike Ranzenhofer will represent the taxpayers in Albany with a record of reform, transparency, lower taxes, and less government regulation," said County Republican Committee Chairman Jim Domagalski.

Mayor's appointment puzzles trustees
      Some of the Williamsville Village Board trustees appeared confused following an appointment Mayor Mary Lowther made during last week's meeting. Lowther appointed Victor Paquet to the Zoning Board of Appeals for a 3.5-year term, which stunned three of the trustees, for various reasons.

Kiwanis fundraiser benefits schools
      The Amherst Kiwanis Club will be at Wal-Mart, 5033 Transit Road, near Sheridan Drive, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 7 and 14, giving away bags of peanuts in exchange for a donation to its scholarship fund. Three scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors in the Amherst school districts.

District taking steps to remove use of plastic foam trays
      In approving a $94,747 bid for Modern Disposal Service, the Williamsville Central School Board revisited an issue brought up at its April meeting - recycling. At that time, the girls of Cadet Troop No. 362 told the board to consider improving its plastic bottle recycling program and ending the use of plastic foam meal trays.

Public hearing set for design phase of improvement project
Niagara Falls Boulevard
      The New York State Department of Transportation will present three intersection improvement designs to the public on June 11. The hearing, to be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sweet Home Middle School, 4150 Maple Road, will focus on U.S. Route 62 - Niagara Falls Boulevard - at Koenig and Ridge Lea roads in the towns of Amherst and Tonawanda.

Inspire Learning Center opens doors
      Inspire Learning Center will celebrate its grand opening with an open house from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 7, at 5445 Transit Road, Clarence. Inspire is taking a new approach to teaching and helping students to learn. The staff at the center are all New York-certified teachers, many with more than 10 years of classroom teaching experience.

Summer of Music Program welcomes band members
      The Williamsville Summer of Music Program is in full swing. Private and semi-private lessons on every instrument and voice will be offered throughout July. Interested musicians can sign up for these performance groups: 5-8 string orchestra, 9-12 choir, 5-6 band, 7-9 band and Williamsville Community Band, for anyone 10th grade through adult.

      On June 7, 2008, Jeannette Elizabeth Apel Christ will turn 100 years old. The Suburban Women's Club of Buffalo honored Christ last week with a party during their bridge game - during which, members of the group joked that she is turning 99 plus one.

Fast food drive-thru causes overnight disturbances
      According to Village Board Trustee Basil Piazza, "I need a chicken sandwich with fries and a drink," isn't exactly what residents on North Long Street in Williamsville want to hear in the middle of the night. At last week's meeting, Piazza said several residents have complained to him regarding noise coming from the McDonald's 24-hour drive-through at 5316 Main St.
