Get in gear for the Spin-A-Thon
What pedals for 12 hours but never moves an inch?
The riders in the fourth annual Spin-A-Thon, organized by the American Cancer Society.
Participants will operate the stationary bikes at Gold's Gym at Wehrle Drive and Union Road for 12 hours, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.
Karen Lynn Fischer, director of Worksite and Healthcare Initiatives for the society, said participants can ride for just one hour or all 12.
"People can sign up to ride with a team or be a solo rider; it's just a one-hour spin class," she said, adding that instructors will rotate.
The annual event, started by Kara Klaasesz, has raised $35,000 since its inception.
The money is raised by pledges collected by the riders. Donations are also accepted for the American Cancer Society.
"Money raised goes to the Western New York region of the American Cancer Society to fund patient services, education, research and advocacy," Fischer said.
Each week in 2007, more than 170 individuals in WNY were diagnosed with cancer, and 70 died from the disease.
The event will also include a Chinese auction and refreshments. Awards will be given for the top fundraising team, top fundraising individual and athlete with the most spinning hours.
