Maryland defeats Duke in seventh grade hoops

Maryland defeated Duke, 23-11, in a recent Amherst Youth Basketball seventh grade hoops game.

Maryland clung to an 11-6 halftime lead. The second half saw Maryland's Ben Morina leading the way with eight of his 11 points along with Michael Torrillo (six points).

Morina and Torrillo made strong passes and provided strong leadership. C.J. Westcott (four points) and Andrew Pierino (three points) ripped down numerous rebounds. Phil Blatner and Mark Berquist also provided solid defense to limit Duke offensive chances.

Duke was led offensively by Nick Kierner (four points) along with strong rebounding by Evan Poole (two points).

Fifth-sixth-grade girls

Kansas 20, Oklahoma 19

In a seesaw battle, Kansas pulled out a 20-19 victory against Oklahoma on Dec. 18.

The score was tied at the end of the first and second quarters, with Oklahoma taking a one-point lead at the end of the third with a foul shot by Raelin Brown.

Kansas fought back in the fourth to overtake Oklahoma to win the game by one in a hard-fought battle by both teams.

Raelin Brown led Oklahoma's scoring with seven points, with two points each scored by Madison Kather, Laura Matthews, Alexis Ogra, Nisha Divan, Sarah Garcia and Samantha Weiss.

Kansas' Jordan Weinstein and Jenna Stogsdill led their team with six points each, while Jennifer Schwab had four points and Alexa Slisz and Morgan Kennedy added a bucket apiece.
