Flames' loss to WS East closer than score indicates
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Williamsville East dropped a 33-18 decision on the wrestling mat to West Seneca East last Wednesday at home, but the match was a lot closer than what the score indicated.

"Out of the 13 matches, we won five and they won eight," said East coach Henry Fumerelle. "We lost four matches by one-point decisions that could have gone either way. It was that close."

Freshman Sam Beichner lost 3-2 at 103 pounds but was in the process of taking down his opponent as the buzzer sounded to end the match. The same went for sophomore Ben Mikac, who fell 4-3 at 112. Senior Jayson Dieckman dropped a 4-3 decision at 145. Sophomore Jason Beichner lost 2-0 at 125.

Seniors Max Cohen (pin, 130) and Sean Trabert (4-0, 152), juniors Matt Calleri (1-0, 135) and Brandon Munoz (4-0, 140), and sophomore M.P. Joseph (4-1, 215) picked up wins for East. Joseph usually wrestles at 189.

West Seneca East is ranked sixth in Western New York large schools in the latest Section VI polls. East is 10th. The loss to West Seneca East was East's first team loss this year. They opened the season by winning the Maple Grove Kick-off Classic and duals over Roy-Hart, Sweet Home, Starpoint and Lake Shore.

West Seneca East is one of several teams East could wrestle in the Akron Holiday Tournament at 9 a.m. on Friday at Akron High School.
