Out of the Past Dec. 28, 1882 Last week Wednesday evening at about seven o'clock a large barn on the farm of George Fries, about three miles northwest of Eggertsville, caught fire from a lantern which the hired man had in the barn and was burned to the ground, together with its contents. The barn contained about 1,000 bushels of grain, thirty tons of hay, mower and reaper, and grain drill, all a total loss. By strenuous exertions, all the live stock were saved. Misses Florence and Emma Hayes of Clarence spent Christmas with relatives in Williamsville. Mr. George T. Freeman of Swormville and Miss Prosser, of Pendleton, were united in marriage on the 26th. Would Miss J.M.S. please send items earlier, as those sent last week were received after The Bee was published. Mr. Frank Zook started last week for California to accept a prominent position in a bank. A bit of cotton batting sprinkled with black pepper and wet with sweet oil and inserted into the ear will cure earache. "Some men are like an umbrella with a crook handle. They are always hanging around in out-of-the-way places and are never to be found when they are wanted." "The deacon's son was telling the minister about bees stinging his father, and the minister inquired, 'Sting your pa did they? Well what did your pa say?' 'Step this way a moment,' said the boy, 'I'd rather whisper it to you.'" 100 Years Ago Dec. 26, 1907 The Buffalo, Rochester and Eastern Railroad will begin work next spring, which will make accommodations for Swormville, Millersport, Pendleton, Wolcottsburg, Rapids and the whole vicinity in and around the Towns of Amherst and Clarence. Williamsville was appalled at the wanton cutting of a 20-foot pine tree at the front of the Williamsville Central Junior-Senior High School last Thursday evening. Four seniors, five alumni and a former student are involved . . . it is likely the four culprits will have a rough time of it should they be allowed to return to school.
