East wrestlers get monkey off back, defeat Starpoint, Lake Shore
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Williamsville East's wrestling team not only improved its record to 4-0 last week, but it also avenged some old losses.

The Flames beat Starpoint, 33-27, last Wednesday at East, and won 40-17 last Friday at Lake Shore.

East coach Henry Fumerelle said the Starpoint victory was East's first win against the Spartans in five years in either wrestling or football. Lake Shore had beaten East in wrestling the last two years.

East had to win its last two matches to defeat Starpoint. Senior Max Cohen defeated Dan Whittal, 6-4, at 130 pounds to tie the overall score at 27-27, and senior Matt Calleri pinned Christian Sziega at 135 to lift the Flames to the team win.

Another key win for East came from sophomore Will Kelly, who beat Starpoint senior Joe Santana, 4-0, in double overtime at 171.

Other East wrestlers who earned wins against Starpoint were Brandon Munoz (140, pin); Jayson Dieckman (145, pin); M.P. Joseph (189, pin); and Ben Mikac (112, 8-4).

East lost only three matches against Lake Shore. Calleri dominated Randy Weston, a state qualifier last year, 10-0. Weston beat Calleri last year.

Others Flames who won against Lake Shore were Jacob Beichner (125, 13-0 over Pat Mix); Cohen (130, pin in 22 seconds); Munoz (140, 8-3); Dieckman (145, pin); Sean Trabert (152, 15-4); Kelly (171, pin); Sam Beichner (103, beat John Inglut 5-2) and Mikac (112, 11-2).

For the season, Cohen is 7-0 with five pins. Mikac, Jacob Beichner and Calleri are 6-1. Munoz and Kelly are each 7-2. Joseph is 6-2.

East wrestles West Seneca East at 5 p.m. Wednesday at East.
