Genovese sisters lead North to victories
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Williamsville North's offense came alive last week thanks to Maddi and Corrin Genovese.

Maddi, a junior, started at point guard and scored 16 points, including 3-of-5 three-pointers, in the Lady Spartans' 52-40 win last Tuesday at West Seneca West. Corrin, a freshman, came off the bench to score 15 points in North's come-from-behind 47-34 final last Friday at Lancaster.

Corrin Genovese, the starting point guard last season, saw her first minutes of this season against Lancaster. She had been hobbled by an ankle injury she suffered while playing volleyball in the fall for North. She was cleared to practice on Thursday but wasn't expected to be ready to play until the Williamsville Holiday Tournament next week at Williamsville East.

"Corrin had been responding to physical therapy better than they expected, so they released her for last Friday," said North coach Mike Del Valle. "She had been coming to practice but was not allowed to do any hard cutting."

Corrin Genovese scored 13 of her 15 points against Lancaster in the fourth quarter, including 8 of 8 from the free-throw line in the last three minutes.

"She's the straw that stirs the drink," said Del Valle.

Junior Katie Kubala added 13 points and was a force on the offensive and defensive block, said Del Valle. Junior Megan Klansky added nine points.

Lancaster led, 11-8 and 24-18, after the first and second quarters, but North held the Lady Redskins scoreless in the third quarter and scored seven of its own points to take a 25-24 advantage.

"We switched to a trap match-up zone, which is similar to man-to-man," said Del Valle. "We started using it against Lancaster and West Seneca West. We still have to work out some of the kinks."

North opened a 13-9 lead on West Seneca West and maintained it the rest of the way, going up, 26-20, at halftime, and, 38-27, at the end of three quarters.

Klansky scored 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Senior Leslie Ahern added 12 points and hit two threes.

North (3-4, 2-2) lost, 48-29, at Niagara-Wheatfield on Monday. Game highlights will appear in next week's Bee. They host Clarence at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
