South girls rally to beat Iroquois

Williamsville South's girls basketball team came out on fire against Iroquois at home last Tuesday but had to come back to win, 44-40.
South led Iroquois, 16-2, after the first quarter. Junior Cassiana Hyppolite nailed two early three-pointers in the quarter and added a two- pointer.
Iroquois chipped away at its deficit, trailing 22-13 at halftime. The Lady Chiefs tied the game at 28-28 after three quarters, and took a six-point lead in the fourth quarter.
Trailing by six, South freshman Joanna Ostroot answered with a three-point play (two-pointer, free throw) and sophomore Sarah Marcus hit a three in the last two minutes to tie the game at 40-40. Claire Licata scored her only points of the game and Ostroot added another two to lift the Lady Billies to complete the win.
"It was nice to see us gather our composure and make big shots at the end," said South coach Erik Solomon.
Ostroot came off the bench and scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth and grabbed 12 rebounds. Marcus and Hyppolite each scored 12 points a piece. Hyppolite added eight rebounds. Licata had two points, hauled in 10 rebounds and made three steals.
Grace Cunningham led Iroquois with 14 points. Rachel Sluberski chipped in eight points.
South closed out last week with a 47-27 home win over West Seneca East last Friday.
South extended a 10-7 lead after the first quarter to 22-13 at halftime and 36-18 after three quarters.
Seven Lady Billies scored led by Hyppolite's 16 points and five rebounds. Marcus added 10 points. Sophomore Stephanie Bauer had eight points. Ostroot chipped in six.
South (2-3, 2-2) hosted Hutch-Tech on Tuesday but the result was unavailable before The Bee went to press. They host St. Mary's of Lancaster at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
