Amherst, East to field inexperienced indoor track teams
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

The word that best describes the Amherst Central and Williamsville East indoor track teams is inexperience.

Amherst coach Robert LeFauve and East coach Kurt Holme said each of their boys and girls teams is young. LeFauve said only three members of the girls team are upperclassmen.

Amherst Central

On the girls side, LeFauve returns sophomores Brenna Symoniak and Olivia May and freshman Lexie Pace.

Symoniak is a returning Section VI champion in the 3000-meters and won the 1600 in an A/C division meet last Friday at Lancaster High School.

May has already qualified for sectionals in the triple jump. LaFauve said Pace has began what looks to be a productive career as a distance runner.

The freshman trio of Symone Robertson, Tawnee Tabb and Devene Rodolph will lead a young sprint corps, LeFauve said.

Senior Diane Herzog is a team captain.

On the boys team, LeFauve said mid-distance runner, senior captain Dave Symkowiak, is coming off an appearance at the cross-country state meet and will try to add to his school record count.

Senior Deshawn Hough will compete for the sectional title in the 55 hurdles, and junior Elliot Bible should be a sectional qualifier in the 300, LeFauve said. Distance runner Jamie Schwartz is the most promising freshman, said LeFauve.

Williamsville East

The Flames' boys and girls rosters are large but somewhat inexperienced.

The boys with the most experience are third-year runner, junior Dan Egan (55-meter hurdles, long jump) and fourth-year runners, seniors Matt Pawlicki (55 dash, 300, 600) and Greg French (55 hurdles up to 600 meters).

Egan and French qualified for last year's Section VI Championships. French was a sectional runner-up in the 110 hurdles during the outdoor season.

Pawlicki was a captain for the cross-country team this past fall and was an All-Western New York First-Team Scholar-Athlete.

Expected to lead the Flames' relay teams are returning juniors Carl Lew, Andy Anderman and Francisco Riccio. Lew can also run the sprints and long jump.

East's strongest newcomers are seniors Colin Begy and Simon Park.

Begy set the school's outdoor record last spring in the 800, which was broken later in the season by teammate Sean Lanighan, and finished in the top five in the event at sectionals. Begy will run the 600, 1000 and 1600. He finished third in the 300 and fifth in the 600 in the A/B division on Dec. 7 at Buffalo State College.

Park, a hurdler and 100-dash runner during the outdoor season, is expected to run the hurdles and 55 dash, possibly the 300, on indoor.

Sophomore Melissa Spada leads the East girls. Spada excels in the 1000 and 1500. She was a sectional qualifier during the outdoor season.

Promising newcomers include freshman Monica Munoz (hurdles, shot put) and eighth-grader Kala Allen (55 up to 600). Allen won the girls 300 race in an A/B division meet on Dec. 7 at Buffalo State College and the 300 (44.9) and 600 (1:46.6) in a B/D division meet last Friday at Lancaster High School.

Coach Kurt Holme said the strengths of each team will be for the athletes to qualify for sectionals and improve their chances for success in outdoor track.

Holme will be assisted by Cameron Townsend, an accomplished master's athlete who will represent the United States at the World Duathon (run/bike) Championships Sept. 26-27, 2008 in Remini, Italy. Holme said Townsend is often setting the pace in practice for faster athletes.
