Amherst keglers post comeback victory

Amherst Central's boys bowling team earned its first victory of the season after coming back to beat Pioneer, 4-3, last Wednesday at Airport Lanes.

Amherst trailed 3-1 after the first two games and won both final games and total pins, 4,385-4,328, for the victory.

"It was an impressive comeback," said Amherst coach Jason Beckman. "The kids battled hard and made some key shots when they needed to."

The final 'B' game came down to the last frame as Amherst edged Pioneer, 665-662.

The Tigers' "A" team had a strong final two games. Beckman said in the second game, everyone on the team bowled over 200 for an 869. In the last game, they bowled 884 for a 2,470 total over three games, breaking the school record of 2,448 set in 2004.

Dean Snyder led Amherst's "A" team with games of 213, 203 and 259 and a 675 set. Brandon Jeffords rolled a 222. Eric Michalski shot 238-231-627 and Justin Garus had games of 206 and 204.

Chris Oliver paced the Tigers' "B" team with a 188-548.

Amherst opened last week with a 6-1 loss against Maryvale on Dec. 10 at Airport Lanes.

The Tigers' "A" team lost the first game, 735-728, and won the last game, 795-591 after Maryvale made some substitutions.

Michalski threw a match-high 602 set, including a 226 game. Snyder (209), Jeffords (204) and Garus (203) also rolled solid games for the "A" team. Oliver shot a 247 and 592 set to pace the "B" squad.

Michalski leads all Amherst bowlers with a 204.89 average. Garus is next at 194.67. Snyder has a 191.89.
