Band to benefit injured college hoops star
by ELIZABETH TAUFA Reporter

Brian Dux
In November of this year, Mark and Lynda Dux received news that their son, Brian, 26, had been critically injured in a car crash in England.

He suffered brain damage and has been hospitalized since the accident.

"They had to get Brian back from England, so they had to hire a plane, and that alone a plane, and that alone cost around $30,000," said Bill Nowak, member of the band Five to One.

Brian is a former Canisius College basketball player. He was playing professionally in England when he was injured in the car accident.

Nowak is a friend of Mark Dux, who is an area chiropractor and movie score composer and has mentored the band.

To help with the Dux's impending costs, Nowak and Five to One will play a benefit concert for the Brian Dux Assist Fund from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21 at Sportsmen's Tavern, 326 Amherst St., Buffalo.

The show is free, but the band is looking for donations for the fund and for the Dux family.

"There are a lot of people in need in our world and society," Nowak said. "But this story touched us particularly because of the personal connection to Mark."

The band, which Nowak defines as a "rock band with vocal harmonies," plays at Sportsmen's Tavern at the end of each month, but this month's concert will hold a different meaning because of the cause and the upcoming holidays.

"Obviously we're emphasizing the holiday season, and it's a nice way of giving," he said.

Nowak noted that he hopes to keep the bar packed with people willing to donate money to the fund. A free Five to One CD will be given to those who donate $10.

"We have a great network of fans who are good people," he said. "And hopefully people will come out because they know Brian from Canisius basketball."

For anyone who is unable to make the the fundraiser but would like to donate to the fund anyway, checks can be made out to Brian Dux Assist Fund and mailed to c/o Nowak, 50 Inwood Place, Buffalo, NY 14209 or taken to any M&T Bank branch.
