North lady keglers hope to blend right mix Williamsville North went winless in 2006-07, finishing 0-10, but coach Kevin Poplawski hopes the returning bowlers, mixed with a couple of newcomers, will equal some victories. Poplawski's "A" team is comprised of juniors Jackie Vetrano and Maureen O'Brien, senior Sarah Zimmer, and eighth-grader Lindsay Gaffo. The "B" team features sophomores Lauren Fleming and Allison Pieri, freshman Kristen Orr and senior Allison Lyttle. Vetrano and Zimmer, both co-captains, have the most varsity bowling experience (four years) and the team's top averages returning from last year. Poplawski said both should be two of the better bowlers in the division. Poplawski said O'Brien (second year) has shown huge improvement and thinks she can have a breakout year. Poplawski said Pieri has shown a great deal of improvement from last year and could compete for a spot on the "A" team. Fleming and Lyttle are returning for a second year. Griffo and Orr are debuting. Poplawski said Griffo has as much potential as anyone he has had on the team over the past few years. Sophomores Jessica Bialkowski, Sara Fries and Taylor Hyatt, round out the team. Bialkowski is a returning bowler. Fries and Hyatt are new. Poplawski said the biggest area his team needs to improve on to increase its record is consistency on spare shooting. Poplawski thinks Frontier is the favorite to win the division. Clarence should also be good also, he added.
North opened with an 18th place finish at the Maryvale Holiday Tournament on Dec. 3 at Airport Lanes. Zimmer and O'Brien were North's top two bowlers. They lost to Frontier, 7-0, at Legion Lanes on Monday. |
