Despite losing its best bowler from last year, an ECIC Division II and Section VI Class B title are among team goals for Williamsville South's girls bowling team.
That's because the majority of the team returns that finished 7-3 in ECIC II, 8-3 overall and was a Class B sectional runner-up.
South's only starter that graduated was Jessica Mamon, but her impact on the team was huge. Mamon consistently put up great numbers (207 average) and was an All-ECIC Division II all-star. She also set school and ECIC records with a 289 game and 770 set and was part of school records for "A" team single game total (834) and team total (4,055). Mamon bowls at Erie Community College.
"It will obviously be difficult to ask any of our bowlers this year to put up the consistent numbers that Jessica Mamon did last year," said South coach Steve Delisanti. "We are asking each girl to improve 10 pins on their averages to make up for those lost pins."
South's "A" and "B" team have not been determined as of press time but he expects junior Alex Rasey, sophomores Rachel Broardt and Becca Kent and eighth-grader Tricia Kent on the "A" team and sophomores Missy Vetrano and Katie Darnley, junior Liz Scimia and senior captain Jenny Zubricky on "B".
"These eight girls will be expected to be our regulars," said Delisanti. "They are a pretty experienced bunch but still very young."
All of the expected "A" team bowlers average in the 170s. Delisanti said Rasey is a great spare shooter, Broardt is consistent and Tricia and Becca Kent can each put up some high scores.
Becca Kent has bowled with South for four years; Broardt and Rasey for three years; and Tricia Kent for two years.
All of the "B" team bowlers average 140. Delisanti calls Vetrano hard working, Scimia is improving, Zubricky is a solid bowler and Darnley is a great competitor.
Zubricky has the most varsity experience on "B" with four years. Scimia enters her third year on the team. Vetrano and Darnley are back for their second years.
Senior Michelle Giancarlo and sophomore Anissa Bochiechio return. Senior Lucile Cherasse, junior Richelle Recckio and sophomore Shelby Philips are new to the team.
South finished 11th out of 30 teams at the Maryvale Holiday Tournament on Dec. 3 at Airport Lanes. The Lady Billies fell 6-1 to Hamburg on Monday.
Delisanti thinks Sweet Home is the favorite in ECIC II but said his team will always be in contention.
"I feel that if the girls work well together and support each other, we have a shot," said Delisanti.
